Weaning Overview

Weaning is the process of separating young animals from their dams. In Cattle360, recording weaning captures the date and weight at weaning, which is important for tracking growth performance and managing your herd.

What Weaning Records

When you wean an animal in Cattle360, two pieces of data are captured:

  • Weaning Date — The date the animal was weaned from its dam.
  • Weaning Weight — The weight of the animal at the time of weaning.

How Weaning Status Works

An animal is considered weaned when it has a weaning date or weaning weight recorded. This is determined automatically:

  • Not weaned — No weaning date or weight has been recorded.
  • Weaned — A weaning date and/or weaning weight is present on the record.

Where Weaning Status Appears

  • Animal records — The weaning date and weight display on the animal detail page.
  • Group columns — Weaning status can be displayed as a column in group views.
  • Smart group criteria — You can filter smart groups by weaned/not weaned status and weaning date range.

Why Weaning Data Matters

  • Performance measurement — Weaning weight is a key metric for evaluating a cow’s productivity and a calf’s growth.
  • Market readiness — Weaning weight helps determine when calves are ready for the next production stage.
  • Adjusted weaning weight — Comparing weaning weights relative to age helps identify top-performing calves.
