Creating a Smart Group

A smart group automatically includes all animals that match your defined filter criteria. Membership updates dynamically as animal data changes.

How to Create a Smart Group

  1. Navigate to the Groups screen.
  2. Click Add Group.
  3. On the Details tab, fill in:
    • Group Type — Select Smart.
    • Name — Enter a descriptive name for the group.
    • Show on Dashboard (optional) — Toggle on to display this group on the main dashboard.
    • Active (optional) — Toggle on to mark the group as active.
  4. Switch to the Criteria tab and define your filters. See Smart Group Criteria Reference for all available filters.
  5. Switch to the Columns tab to choose which columns display when viewing this group (optional).
  6. Click Save.

How Filters Work

  • Between fields (AND logic) — An animal must match all selected criteria across different fields. For example, if you set Status = Active and Type = Calf, only active calves are included.
  • Within a field (OR logic) — If you select multiple values for a single field, an animal needs to match any one of them. For example, if you set Type = Calf or Type = Cow, both calves and cows are included.

Dynamic Membership

Smart group membership is re-evaluated whenever you view the group. If you wean a calf and the smart group criteria filter for unweaned animals, that calf will automatically drop out of the group. No manual action is needed.

Tips

  • Start simple. Begin with one or two criteria and add more as needed.
  • Use smart groups for ongoing filtered views. They’re ideal for things like “All Active Pregnant Cows” or “Calves Born This Year.”
  • Preview results after saving. Open the group to verify the correct animals are included before relying on it for reports or market analysis.
