Creating Offspring from the Calving Screen
The calving screen is the recommended way to record newborn animals. It automatically pre-fills key fields from the dam’s breeding record.
How to Create Offspring from Calving
- Navigate to the Breedings or Calving screen.
- Find the dam’s active breeding record.
- Click Record Calf.
- The offspring form opens with these fields pre-filled:
- Dam — Set to the breeding cow.
- Sire — Set to the sire from the breeding record.
- Owner — Set to the dam’s owner.
- Birth Date — Pre-filled (can be adjusted).
- Conception Type — Matches the breeding method (Natural or AI).
- Complete the remaining fields:
- Primary Identification — At least one identifier for the new animal.
- Animal Type — Calf.
- Sex — The sex of the newborn.
- Birth Weight — Defaults to 65 lbs but can be changed.
- Click Save.
What Happens After Saving
- A new animal record is created with full lineage linked.
- The breeding record is updated to show that a calf was produced.
- The offspring appears in the dam’s offspring list and the sire’s offspring list.
Tips
- Record calves promptly. Creating the record at birth ensures the birth date and weight are accurate.
- Verify the sire. If the dam was exposed to multiple bulls, confirm the correct sire is assigned.
- Tag the calf first. Assign an ear tag or other identifier before creating the record so you have an ID to enter.
