Calving Overview

The calving workflow in Cattle360 connects breeding records to offspring, automatically linking lineage and recording birth details. This article explains how calving works in the system.

What Is Calving in Cattle360?

Calving is the process of recording the birth of a new animal (calf, kid, or lamb) and linking it to its dam’s breeding record. When a bred cow gives birth, you create the offspring through the calving screen, which:

  • Creates the new animal record with birth date, weight, and lineage pre-filled.
  • Links to the breeding record so you can trace the offspring back to the breeding event.
  • Updates the dam’s breeding status to reflect that the breeding produced a calf.

Two Ways to Record Offspring

  • From the Calving screen — The recommended method. Opens a pre-filled form with the dam, sire, owner, and birth date pulled from the breeding record.
  • Manually from the animal screen — Create a new animal and manually assign the dam. Only the dam is prefilled; you must enter all other details yourself.

Calving and Breeding Connection

When a cow has an active breeding record and calves, the system:

  1. Marks the breeding as having produced a calf.
  2. Calculates the expected due date as breeding date + 283 days.
  3. Pre-fills the offspring form with data from the breeding record.

No Calf Outcome

If a bred animal does not produce a calf (e.g., abortion or resorption), you can mark the breeding as “no calf.” This:

  • Archives the breeding record.
  • Resets the animal’s breeding status to Open.
