Marking No Calf
If a bred animal does not produce a calf (due to abortion, resorption, stillbirth, or failed conception), you can mark the breeding as “no calf” to close out the breeding record.
How to Mark No Calf
- Open the breeding record for the animal.
- Click No Calf (or the equivalent action).
- Confirm the action.
What Happens
- The breeding record is archived. It remains in the animal’s history but is no longer active.
- The animal’s breeding status resets to Open, indicating it is available for re-breeding.
- No offspring record is created.
When to Use This
- Failed conception — The animal was bred but a pregnancy check came back negative.
- Abortion — The animal lost the pregnancy before term.
- Resorption — The embryo was resorbed early in gestation.
- Stillbirth — The calf was born dead and you do not want to create an offspring record.
After Marking No Calf
Since the animal’s breeding status is reset to Open, you can:
- Create a new breeding record for the next breeding attempt.
- Move the animal to a bull pasture for natural re-breeding.
- Cull the animal if it is a repeat breeder or has other issues.
Tips
- Record the reason in comments. Before marking no calf, add a comment to the breeding record explaining what happened (e.g., “Ultrasound negative at 60 days”).
- Track repeat breeders. For AI breedings, the Repeat Breeder flag can be set to identify animals that have been bred multiple times without conceiving.
