Marking No Calf

If a bred animal does not produce a calf (due to abortion, resorption, stillbirth, or failed conception), you can mark the breeding as “no calf” to close out the breeding record.

How to Mark No Calf

  1. Open the breeding record for the animal.
  2. Click No Calf (or the equivalent action).
  3. Confirm the action.

What Happens

  • The breeding record is archived. It remains in the animal’s history but is no longer active.
  • The animal’s breeding status resets to Open, indicating it is available for re-breeding.
  • No offspring record is created.

When to Use This

  • Failed conception — The animal was bred but a pregnancy check came back negative.
  • Abortion — The animal lost the pregnancy before term.
  • Resorption — The embryo was resorbed early in gestation.
  • Stillbirth — The calf was born dead and you do not want to create an offspring record.

After Marking No Calf

Since the animal’s breeding status is reset to Open, you can:

  • Create a new breeding record for the next breeding attempt.
  • Move the animal to a bull pasture for natural re-breeding.
  • Cull the animal if it is a repeat breeder or has other issues.

Tips

  • Record the reason in comments. Before marking no calf, add a comment to the breeding record explaining what happened (e.g., “Ultrasound negative at 60 days”).
  • Track repeat breeders. For AI breedings, the Repeat Breeder flag can be set to identify animals that have been bred multiple times without conceiving.
