Assigning Sire and Dam
Linking animals to their sire (father) and dam (mother) builds your herd’s lineage records. This helps track genetic lines, evaluate breeding decisions, and view offspring.
How to Assign a Sire or Dam
Quick Method (from Summary)
- Open the animal’s record.
- In the summary section, click the Sire or Dam field.
- Search for and select the parent animal.
- The assignment saves automatically.
Full Edit Method
- Open the animal’s record.
- Click Edit.
- In the Calfhood section, set the Sire and/or Dam fields.
- Click Save.
Important Notes
- Parent animals must have records. The sire and dam must already exist as animal records in Cattle360. If a sire is not in your herd, create a Reference animal for it.
- Offspring creation prefills lineage. When you create offspring from the calving screen, the dam and sire are automatically assigned based on the breeding record.
- Both parents are optional. You can assign just a sire, just a dam, or both.
Tips
- Create Reference animals for outside sires. If you use AI sires or lease bulls, create them as Reference animals so you can track their offspring.
- Assign lineage early. Setting sire and dam at birth saves time and prevents forgotten assignments later.
