Rating an Animal
Animal ratings let you score each animal across five categories on a 1–5 star scale. Ratings help you identify your best and worst performers for breeding, culling, and selection decisions.
How to Rate an Animal
- Open the animal’s record.
- Click Actions > Rate Animal, or navigate to the rating section.
- Set a star rating (1–5) for each category:
- Udder Composition — Quality and structure of the udder.
- Docility — Temperament and ease of handling.
- Appearance — Overall physical appearance and conformation.
- Calving Ease — How easily the animal calves (higher is better, meaning fewer problems).
- Industry Standards — How well the animal meets industry standards for its type.
- Optionally add Notes about the rating.
- Click Save.
Rating Scale
| Stars | Meaning |

| 3 | Average |
| 4 | Above average |
| 5 | Excellent |
Tips
- Rate consistently. Use the same criteria and standards across your herd so ratings are comparable.
- Rate after observation. The best time to rate is after handling the animal (e.g., during a working or pregnancy check).
- Use ratings for culling decisions. Animals with consistently low ratings across categories may be candidates for culling.
- Add notes for context. A note like “Pendulous udder, hard for calf to nurse” explains the rating for future reference.
